DECEMBER 15, 2020 People globally offer mixed views of the impact of artificial intelligence, job automation on society As artificial intelligence (AI) plays a growing role in the everyday lives of people around the world, views on AI’s impact on society are mixed across 20 global publics, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.   A median of about half (53%) say the development of artificial intelligence, or the use of computer systems designed to imitate human behaviors, has been a good thing for society, while 33% say it has been a bad thing. Opinions are also divided on another major technological development: using robots to automate many jobs humans have done in the past. A median of 48% say job automation has been a good thing, while 42% say it’s had a negative impact on society. The survey – conducted in late 2019 and early 2020 in 20 places […]

CES 2019 Searching for AI & Robotic Innovation

CES 2019: Searching for AI and Robotics Innovation  The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is always a good barometer for measuring how the latest technologies are being infused into real consumer products and observing some of the innovations coming down the pipeline. The focus of CES has shifted in the past few years with themes like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR), wearables, and autonomous cars proliferating. This year, some themes like AI, IoT, and smart home were much more pronounced, while others like VR and wearables seemed hushed by comparison. Read More

Healthcare cybersecurity.

Digital Health’s cybersecurity imperative   This article was written by Dave Anderson and originally was published on BlackRidge Technology blog   If you haven’t already heard, the age of digital health is upon us. And for healthcare providers, patients and consumers, it’s about time Digital health, sometimes referred to as eHealth or Mobile Health, comprises many elements, but for this inquiry I’ll focus on defining digital health as how healthcare companies, hospitals and care services companies, and patients are adopting and using wireless devices, hardware sensors, software sensing technologies, the Internet, social networking, health info tech, personal health devices or wearables, and mobile connectivity to empower more efficient tracking, management, and delivery of “healthcare.” Already, digital health has shown the ability to improve our own and our family’s health and live more productive lives. Digital health reduces many of the inefficiencies in healthcare delivery, it improves access to healthcare information and services, […]

Tech companies should stop pretending AI won’t destroy jobs

No matter what anyone tells you, we’re not ready for the massive societal upheavals on the way. February 21, 2018,     by  Kai-Fu Lee  It will soon be obvious that half our tasks can be done better at almost no cost by AI. This will be the fastest transition humankind has experienced, and we’re not ready for it. I took an Uber to an artificial-intelligence conference at MIT one recent morning, and the driver asked me how long it would take for autonomous vehicles to take away his job. I told him it would happen in about 15 to 20 years. He breathed a sigh of relief. “Well, I’ll be retired by then,” he said. Good thing we weren’t in China. If a driver there had asked, I would have had to tell him he’d lose his job in about 10 years—maybe 15 if he was lucky. That might sound surprising, given […]

Fourth Industrial Revolution

The world is changing. Here’s how companies must adapt this article is the part of The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting,   /  written by Joe Kaeser The Fourth Industrial Revolution will eliminate millions of jobs and create millions of new ones. Image:     / REUTERS   Although we have only seen the beginning, one thing is already clear: the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the greatest transformation human civilization has ever known. As far-reaching as the previous industrial revolutions were, they never set free such enormous transformative power. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is transforming practically every human activity: the way we make things; the way we use the resources of our planet; the way we communicate and interact with each other as humans; the way we learn; the way we work; the way we govern; and the way we do business. Its scope, speed and reach are unprecedented. Think of it: Just 10 […]

Robot workers in the world

South Korea has the highest density of robot workers in the world Written by Rob Smith, Formative Content             publishing  by  the World Economic Forum. Robot workers have increased by 9% in Asia                                                      Image: Ford-India/Reuters/Babu Industrial robots are no longer preserved for a select few companies. And they aren’t so much coming: they have now fully arrived. Between 2015 and 2016, the average number of robot workers globally increased from 66 units per 10,000 human workers to 74. This density shows no signs of slowing according to data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), that reveals the number of installed industrial robots within the global manufacturing industry in 2016. South Korea had 631 robots per 10,000 human workers, the most of any nation. The […]

This Google AI created a ‘child’ AI to help it solve problems In brief Google’s AutoML project, designed to make AI build other AIs, has now developed a computer vision system that vastly outperforms state-of-the-art-models. The project could improve how autonomous vehicles and next-generation AI robots “see.” An AI That Can Build AI In May 2017, researchers at Google Brain announced the creation of AutoML, an artificial intelligence (AI) that’s capable of generating its own AIs. More recently, they decided to present AutoML with its biggest challenge to date, and the AI that can build AI created a “child” that outperformed all of its human-made counterparts. The Google researchers automated the design of machine learning modelsusing an approach called reinforcement learning. AutoML acts as a controller neural network that develops a child AI network for a specific task. For this particular child AI, which the researchers called NASNet, the task was recognizing objects — people, cars, traffic […]

Uber Self-Driving car kills pedestrian

Uber self-driving car kills pedestrian in first fatal autonomous crash by Matt McFarland@mattmcfarland,      March 19, 2018: 1:40 PM ET Uber has removed its self-driving cars from the roads following what is believed to be the first fatality involving a fully autonomous car. A self-driving Uber SUV struck and killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bicycle across a street in Tempe, Arizona, Sunday night, according to the Tempe police. The department is investigating the crash. Rafael Vasquez, a 44-year-old test driver from Uber, was behind the wheel of the Volvo XC90 SUV at the time, the police said. Based on preliminary information, the car was going approximately 40 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to Tempe Police Detective Lily Duran. Police say the investigation does not at this time show significant signs of the SUV slowing before the crash. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will […]
